There is something very unique and special about Gettysburg College, something inspirational. Perhaps it is because every day we have the opportunity to walk in the footsteps of those who sacrificed and made history. It is also because the college is a place that encourages us to dream and to then to figure out how to achieve our dreams. And, finally, it is because the College is a place that builds relationships between students and faculty and between the institution and those who have left and taken the dream with them.
This relationship is the reason why this website is present today, because the Gettysburg College Bullets Baseball Team has made the decision to join the Kirchhoff family full-heartedly in the battle against ALS.
For those of you not familiar with the Kirchhoff family, Bill (Gburg baseball class of ’63) and Jean (Gburg class of ’64) are devout supporters of the Gettysburg baseball team– with our field named in their honor. Their late son, Tom, was diagnosed with ALS in 2010. Tom’s battle with ALS ended on March 15th 2015. He was an exemplary QB at Lafayette College in Easton, Pa. (setting school records for passing yards, etc.) He is survived by his wife and outstanding family.
On October 30th 2014, Gettysburg Baseball was dealt another disheartening blow in the loss of our friend Robert “Bob” Borman(father of Rob Borman ’05). “Bob” was an outstanding patron of the team and is survived by his wife and wonderful family. His support is sorely missed, but just like Tom, his presence is missed even more. In the face of these hardships, the program and these families have forged an unbreakable bond in our fight against ALS.
As 5,600 people in the U.S. are diagnosed with ALS each year, we are all called to help find the cause, and subsequently a cure. We as a team have raised over $130,000 since 2013 through T-shirt and hat sales, as well as through private donations. Our goal each season is to foster awareness about the disease and do our best to raise funds for Project ALS. We call upon all who are willing and able to play a part in this cause. There are many facets to a battle, and there are many opportunities to play a role in this one! Please stay posted with our next plans to help “Take ALS Yard.”
